The Truth About AGM Capacity and RMS Power

One of the most repeated “rules” in car audio is that you need 100 amp-hours of AGM battery for every 1,000 watts RMS of amplifier power. You’ll read it on forums, in comment threads, and sometimes on product pages. It’s an easy soundbite, but it’s not accurate unless you accept a lot of unstated assumptions. That guideline grew out of older systems and workarounds; it isn’t an engineering specification you should use to design an electrical system today.

RMS Ratings Are Not Constant Draw

RMS is an amplifier’s rated output capability, not a measure of continuous draw from the vehicle. Music is dynamic—crest factor and program material mean most listening is far below full rated power. In practice, many amplifiers average somewhere between one-third and one-half of rated RMS during normal playback. A 1,000-watt RMS amp will rarely, under musical content, draw a full 1,000 watts continuously.

Efficiency and System Voltage Matter

Amplifier class and efficiency materially change the current the electrical system must supply. Modern Class D subwoofer amplifiers commonly run in the 80–90% efficiency range. If the amp is delivering 1,000 watts to the speakers, the electrical input might be 1,100–1,250 watts depending on efficiency and loss. At a charging-system voltage around 14 volts, that translates to roughly 80–90 amps of demand—not a 100-amp-hour battery magically dumping 1,000 watts.

Equally important: a 100 Ah AGM at 12 volts represents about 1,200 watt-hours of stored energy in ideal conditions. In theory that could supply a 1,000-watt load for a little over an hour, but a car’s charging system and the alternator are the primary energy source whenever the engine is running. The battery’s job is buffering, not continuous supply.

The Alternator Is the Primary Power Source

In a properly designed system the alternator provides continuous current. The battery makes up shortfalls and smooths peaks. If your alternator is sized for the continuous demand you want, a single quality battery will handle the transient peaks. Adding dozens of amp-hours of battery capacity won’t compensate for an alternator that cannot deliver the continuous current your amplifiers demand.

A common failure in system planning is configuring a weak charging system and then trying to “fix” it by adding battery capacity in the trunk. That only delays the inevitable voltage collapse or long-term depletion; the alternator still must replenish the energy, and if it can’t, the extra capacity simply prolongs the symptom without solving the root cause.

Impedance Rise and Real-World Load

Amplifier ratings assume a specific load impedance. In real installations impedance rises with frequency and temperature, and enclosure and driver behavior reduce continuous output relative to bench ratings. That reduces real-world current draw compared to the theoretical maximum. When planning wiring, fusing, and charging upgrades, account for a realistic program-power expectation rather than the amplifier’s maximum bench rating.

Where the 100 Ah Rule Came From

The “100 Ah per 1,000 W” guideline traces back to an era when amplifiers were far less efficient and high-output alternators were expensive or uncommon. Installers used large AGM banks to hold voltage during long, loud bursts. Over time the rule of thumb became shorthand and then myth. Today’s class-D amps, available alternator upgrades, and lithium battery technologies make that blanket rule obsolete for most builds.

What Actually Matters When Designing a System

  1. Alternator output:
    Size the alternator to cover continuous current demand. This is the single most important change you can make for reliable, consistent performance.
  2. Battery support:
    Use a quality battery—AGM or lithium depending on budget and space—as a buffer for momentary peaks beyond the alternator’s capability. Match the battery to the role you expect it to play: engine-start support, transient buffering, or standalone house-battery duties.
  3. Wiring and grounding:
    Run correct-gauge power and ground, minimize connection resistance, and use solid termination practices. Voltage drop from poor wiring or loose grounds costs power and creates heat, negating even generous battery capacity.

Practical Installer Advice

Start every electrical design by estimating steady-state current under realistic use, not amplifier nameplate watts. Size the alternator to support that continuous draw. Add an appropriately rated battery to smooth peaks and provide reserve. If you need longer run times with the engine off, then size battery capacity to the expected run time and load—not to amplifier RMS alone.

Finally, measure. Voltage under load, alternator output at operating temperature, and system behavior during record-level bursts give you the answers that rules of thumb never will. A multimeter, an oscilloscope or logging DC ammeter, and real-world listening tests are the installer’s tools; use them to validate your design rather than relying on an arbitrary amp-hour-per-watt number.
